Stressors

A stressor is an activity or an event that causes stress. My husband experienced a stressor during his childhood with racism. Racism has existed throughout human history. It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another or the belief that another person is less than human because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes. During the past 500-1000 years, racism on the part of Western powers toward non-Westerners has had a far more significant impact on history than any other form of racism such as racism among Western groups or among Easterners, such as Asians, Africans, and others.

When my husband was in his younger childhood, he went to a school that only had 2 African Americans and he as included in the 2. He said that the children called him and the other African American child bad names. He also said that thesome of the parents took their children out of school because they attended the school. He doesn't show in any way that it affected him but it was stressful for him during that time. Now I have a son that's 16 years old and he doesn't see color at all like my husband. He has friends of all cultures. We talked with him about racism and he realy didn't understand it. He even got offended when my daughter tried to give him examples of events that have happened dealing with racism. I feel that we should treat everyone like we want to be treated whether they are black, white, orange or blue, it shouldn't matter. I've taught my kids to never judge a person from the outside but the inside.

Some children do suffer from racism for a long period of time. I watched Oprah during black history month and there were so may people on there who were still hurting from something that happened when they were children. For example, one lady was on there and she talked about how this other lady called her names and made fun of her to her friends an bothered her everyday. This lady was still hurt today from that incident. The lady apologize for doing all those horrible things to her and gave her a hug. It was sad to see. Racism still lives but people need to get right with God because they will have to answer to that one day. Children in all states and countries effected by racism  however it is stronger in some places than others.

Below is a picture of my husband and I.

  1. As a child I grew up in a neighborhood as the only. When I spoke to my mother about mean children and having no friends. She would tell me I was not at school to make friends, go read a book”. I thought she didn’t care about me. On Sunday we had dinner together as a family and talking about the news of the week. At those dinners I learned that when we moved into our childhood home neighbors moved out. That my four older sisters took a school bus with other black teenage to a beach that was still labeled as for whites only. That one of my sisters got into arguments with her teachers and principle because she told them when they said racies inappropriate things to the class. We watched the news to see black children being bused across town to segregated school. While whites screamed at them, threw glass bottles and paint at the school buses as they drove bye. That my parents purchased my first childhood home in the all white neighborhood because they believed that was the where the best schools where. Today I’m 47 years old and grew up in Peabody, Massachusetts. My sisters are all success in the fields of education, engineering, medicine and of course law. When graduated from high school in 1980, my parents purchased a home in an area named the Estates and yes they were the still the only.

  3. @Lilliane, thanks for your feedback! Racism still lives today and my daughter experienced it while working in one of the prejudice counties long ago Andrea today. She end up quitting and finding a better school with better pay. That's sad that you had to experience all of that hate and there was nothing that you could do. @ Laury, thanks! He said it made him the great individual that he is today including being a father who has talked to his children about racism.
